President's Message

Dear colleagues and friends,

I would like to start my tenure (2019-2021) as Malaysia Spine Society (MSS) President by expressing my gratitude to my predecessor, Professor Dr. Sabarul Afian Mokhtar, and also, to the past Executive Committee Members. Under Prof. Dr. Sabarul’s leadership, MSS has made significant steps towards achieving its goals.

I would also like to thank MSS members for entrusting me to helm the society’s leadership. It is a great privilege and honour for me and I will dedicate all my efforts to bring this society to the next level of success.
The 7th MSS International Conference in Ipoh, Perak that was chaired by Dato’ Dr. K S Sivananthan was a great success. The programme was very well structured with good instructional lectures, case discussions, and oral and posters presentations, which benefited more than 300 delegates who attended them.

I am looking forward to our next 8th Annual Scientific Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, which will be held from 14th - 16th August 2020. These annual meetings provide us with the perfect opportunity to update our knowledge by learning from renowned international speakers as well as from our own local fellow surgeons. This upcoming event will continue to keep us informed with the progress in the field of spine care besides providing us with opportunities for networking. The educational activities, i.e. plenary lectures, instructional course lectures, meet-the-expert sessions and free papers sessions will also enable the participants, particularly the younger surgeons and postgraduate trainees, to learn more about spine care management. Besides the Annual Scientific Meeting, MSS will also organise some local circle meetings and courses throughout the year, and we hope our members will participate actively in these planned activities.

MSS is moving towards to become a more internationalised society. We will participate actively and work closely with other international spine societies, e.g. Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS), and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), as well as other regional spine societies. We will also like encourage our members to participate actively in these international and regional meetings. From 2019 onwards, MSS will be offering education grants to its members to participate in these events.

MSS is evolving in a very dynamic manner. We are planning to revise our organisational structure by setting up new sub-committees in order to improve its efficiency. We have also started to form special interest groups for different sub-specialties. In the very near future, we hope to be able to inspire our members to participate more on research activities by formulating MSS research grants.

Finally, I would like to encourage more spine surgeons to participate in the society’s activities and grow together with us.

Prof Dato’ Dr Kwan Mun Keong
President of MSS (2019-2021)
